A manual slack adjuster is a component that requires manual intervention to maintain the proper brake clearance. As a vehicle accumulates mileage, brake wear occurs, causing the clearance between the brake components to widen; consequently, manual adjustment is necessary to restore the correct spacing. Because this process relies on manual input, it is susceptible to delays and inconsistency. Such issues can lead to uneven clearances across different brakes, prolonged brake response times, wheel pull, vehicle fishtailing, or even complete brake failure. To mitigate these risks, periodic inspections and manual adjustments of the brake clearance are required to ensure it remains constant and consistent.
Due to their lower cost, manual slack adjusters currently hold a significant share of the heavy-duty truck market. However, these manual systems are unable to deliver the sustained, efficient, and consistently reliable braking performance required by large-tonnage heavy vehicles. Their use can easily result in brake lag and uneven braking-or "brake pull"-and may even cause brake linings to loosen or detach, thereby posing serious safety hazards to operating vehicles. Consequently, automatic slack adjusters are emerging as the new industry trend.
